You have bought fresh beans and smell the delicious aroma of the beans, your mouth is watering right away. But how do you make the best coffee? In this blog we explain how to do this using the Pour Over Method. We take you step by step through this process and give you tips on what to look out for. What is pour over coffee anyway? Pour over coffee is also called slow coffee. This is a pretty classic way of brewing coffee where you gradually pour coffee over the ground coffee that is in a loose filter holder. We call this filter holder a Dripper, it comes in many types and variations for our example we will use the plastic version from Hario. What do you need? Not much.
- Good coffee beans
- Pour over device such as a Chemex or Hario V60 but of course you can use other filter holders as well
- Filters
- Coffee scale preferably with a timer
- Coffee cup or mug
- Kettle
How do you make pour over coffee?
You start by boiling a good half liter of water, when this is boiled you place the filter in the holder and wet the filter a little, this ensures that the taste of the paper of the filter is not mixed with the taste of the coffee. Fill your cup with warm water, this ensures that your coffee does not cool down too quickly. Next, grind 22 grams of beans to a fairly fine grind. Once the beans are ground, pour 350 ml of water from the kettle into a jug or pot that you can easily pour. Now pour about 25 ml of water on the beans over a time of 15 seconds, now wait until 45 seconds and then pour a little water each time in a circular motion. If all goes well you should be at 350 ml of water between 3 and 3.5 minutes. If you need longer then your grind is too fine, if you finish earlier then your grind is probably too coarse. All you have to do now is replace the water in your cup with the fragrant coffee you just made and enjoy a perfect cup of pour over coffee.
